Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, made a major announcement for farmers from his parliamentary constituency Varanasi. He officially released the 20th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. This time, a total of ₹20,500 crore has been directly transferred to the bank accounts of around 9.7 crore farmers across the country through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
This is the third instalment of 2025 and the 20th instalment of the scheme, under which every eligible farmer has received ₹2,000 in their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. The scheme has become one of the largest initiatives aimed at financially strengthening crores of farmers in the country.
What is the PM-KISAN Scheme?
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) is a flagship scheme of the Government of India, launched on 1 February 2019. Its primary objective is to provide annual financial assistance to small and marginal farmers, helping them meet their agricultural needs and become self-reliant.
Under this scheme, the central government provides every eligible farmer family with ₹6,000 annually in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 each. This amount is fully funded by the central government and directly transferred to the bank accounts of the beneficiary farmers.
So far, more than ₹3.9 lakh crore has been deposited into the accounts of beneficiary farmers under this scheme.
What Did PM Modi Say?
While releasing the instalment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated:
“PM-KISAN is not just a scheme but a mission to transform the lives of small farmers. It is helping them become self-reliant. The government’s aim is to ensure that India’s farmers are strong and capable of deciding the future of their own fields.”
The Prime Minister also highlighted that the Government of India is extensively using digital technology to make the process more transparent and efficient.
