Reliance Unveils World’s Largest Solar Project in Gujarat
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), India’s largest and most active company, made a major and ambitious announcement at its 48th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday. Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani revealed that Reliance is developing the world’s largest single-site solar project in Gujarat’s Kutch district, spread over an area three times the size of Singapore. This project is set to transform India’s energy landscape and firmly establish the country on the global clean energy map.
A Massive Solar Power Hub in Gujarat
For this mega solar project, Reliance has secured 5,50,000 acres of land in Kutch. To put its scale into perspective, this area is nearly three times larger than the total size of Singapore, underlining the grandeur and significance of the initiative. Ambani said that within the next decade, the project will be capable of meeting nearly 10% of India’s total electricity demand. He added that at peak capacity, it will deploy 55 megawatts of solar modules daily and 150 megawatt-hours of battery containers.
This initiative will not only reduce India’s dependence on conventional energy sources but also help the country gain a competitive edge by promoting green energy and achieving new heights in clean power generation. The battery containers will address storage challenges and ensure round-the-clock electricity supply.
Jamnagar Giga Energy Complex
Ambani also disclosed that work on the Dhirubhai Ambani Giga Energy Complex in Jamnagar is progressing rapidly. He described it as the largest and most unique project of its kind in the world, comparable to Tesla’s Gigafactory but nearly four times larger. According to him, the complex will be the size of 100 Eiffel Towers combined and will be fully powered by digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
The Jamnagar Energy Complex will house both conventional and green energy plants, operating together to position India as a global energy hub. In the coming years, it will emerge as a commercial and technological centre of energy production, setting new benchmarks for energy security and environmental sustainability.
A New Era in Solar PV Manufacturing
Reliance has also started solar PV (photovoltaic) manufacturing. In its first facility, the company has already produced HJT modules with 200 megawatt capacity. These modules generate 10% more energy than conventional ones, offer 20% better temperature resilience, and show 25% less degradation. This technology will significantly boost efficiency and durability in India’s solar energy sector.
Ambani further announced that in the coming years, Reliance aims to achieve an annual solar module production capacity of 10 GWp to 20 GWp. The goal is to transform this single location into the world’s largest and most integrated solar manufacturing hub.
Battery and Electrolyser Giga Factories to Begin in 2026
Reliance has planned to launch its battery and electrolyser giga factories from 2026 onwards. Initially, the factory will have an annual capacity of 40 GWh, which will be expanded to 100 GWh in the future. This will be crucial for battery production catering to the electric vehicle industry and large-scale energy storage.
Through the electrolyser facility, Reliance will also produce green hydrogen, an eco-friendly fuel that will revolutionise power generation, heavy industries, and the transport sector. The company has set a target of producing 3 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually in India by 2032.
Expanding the Green Energy Network
The impact of Reliance’s mega project will extend beyond just the energy sector. The company has also invested in biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, green ammonia, and battery storage, integrating these with other emerging energy sources. Recently, Reliance announced new projects worth ₹75,000 crore, signalling a new direction for India’s energy future.
