Share market today: Volatility was seen in the Indian stock market on August 21. After a sudden fall in early trade, Nifty gradually gained momentum and closed at 24,770.20 with a gain of 71.35 points at the end of the trading session. During this, the defensive FMCG sector was the most bullish with a gain of 1.30%.

Rise and fall in the stock market

Some volatility was seen in the Sensex and Nifty, but in the end both the indices showed positive changes. Sector rotation helped the Nifty maintain higher levels, although negative divergence is visible on the momentum indicator, which is likely to slow down the uptrend.

The top gainers in Nifty included Divis Labs, Titan Company, SBI Life Insurance, Hindalco Industries and Grasim Industries. At the same time, the biggest losers were Tech Mahindra, UltraTech Cement, Tata Steel, Power Grid Corp and ONGC.

Sectoral performance

The realty index fell by 1 per cent, while the bank index declined by 0.3 per cent. FMCG, healthcare, metal, telecom and media sectors gained 0.5-1 per cent. The BSE midcap index gained 0.4 per cent, and the smallcap index gained nearly 1 per cent.
