The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced the implementation of new rules from September 1, 2024, which aim to provide relief to telecom users from spam calls and messages. Under these rules, companies will no longer be allowed to send URLs, OTT links or call-back requests to users who are not registered on their network. Additionally, messages sent by companies will be tracked and any fake links or callback requests will be blocked.
From September 30, 2024, 140 series numbers of telecom companies and other service providers will be shifted to Distributed Laser Technology (DLT), making it easier to identify the numbers of companies. These numbers will be identified by a specific series, giving clarity to the users.
TRAI has also instructed telecom operators to install spam filters, which will help prevent spam calls and messages. Although the Artificial Intelligence (AI) based filters are still in the testing phase, Bharti Airtel has started using this tool. Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are also planning to implement it by the end of this year.
With the implementation of these new rules, telecom users are expected to get better security and privacy, which will reduce spam calls and fraud incidents.
