A mild but noticeable earthquake jolted parts of Pakistan’s Balochistan province early Sunday morning, triggering panic among residents. According to the National Seismic Monitoring Center (NSMC), the earthquake was recorded on December 21, 2025, in Khuzdar district. The tremor measured 3.3 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located about 70 kilometers west of Khuzdar city. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of just 8 kilometers, which made the shaking more pronounced at the surface.
People Wake Up in Panic, Rush to Open Areas
The earthquake struck in the early morning hours when most people were asleep. As homes and beds began to shake suddenly, residents rushed out of their houses in fear. For a few minutes, scenes of confusion and panic were reported across Khuzdar and nearby areas. Many people were seen moving toward open fields and roads, praying as they tried to reach safer places.
Local residents shared their experiences on social media, saying, “The tremors were not very strong, but they were clearly felt. We could hear slight noises from walls and doors.”
Relief came quickly as no reports of casualties or damage to property were received. The local administration confirmed that the situation remained under control and there was no major emergency.
Administration on Alert After the Tremor
Immediately after the earthquake, teams from the Khuzdar district administration and disaster management authorities were put on alert. Officials carried out inspections in sensitive areas as a precautionary measure. The NSMC monitoring center confirmed that the earthquake was shallow in nature, which tends to make tremors feel stronger, although the overall energy release was limited.
A local official stated, “Initial reports do not indicate any damage. The administration remains vigilant, and all departments have been instructed to stay prepared for emergency response if required.”
So far, no aftershocks have been reported. Experts note that such low-intensity earthquakes usually represent a natural release of energy and generally pose minimal risk.
Balochistan Remains a Seismically Active Region
Balochistan has long been considered a seismically sensitive region. The area lies near the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are constantly moving against each other. As a result, the region frequently experiences mild to moderate earthquakes.
Earlier this month, on December 3, 2025, a 3.3 magnitude tremor was also recorded in Khuzdar, while a separate 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck another part of Balochistan. In the past, the province has witnessed devastating seismic events, including the 2008 Ziarat earthquake, which claimed over 200 lives and destroyed thousands of homes.
Experts believe such incidents highlight the urgent need to strengthen earthquake-resistant infrastructure and disaster preparedness across the region.
Panic Subsides, Awareness Among Residents Grows
Residents of Khuzdar expressed relief that the tremor was mild. Many said that lessons from past earthquakes have made people more aware of evacuation routes and safe practices during seismic events. Schools and government buildings already conduct earthquake safety drills, and authorities are now planning to further strengthen these measures.
A local shopkeeper said, “As soon as the doors started shaking, we stepped outside and moved our families to a safe place. There was fear, but awareness among people has improved.”
NSMC Urges Public to Avoid Rumors, Stay Alert
In its official statement, the National Seismic Monitoring Center said that no aftershocks or damage had been reported so far. However, it urged citizens to remain alert and immediately inform authorities if they notice anything unusual.
While current data suggests the earthquake was of low intensity, experts caution that in sensitive geological zones, small tremors can sometimes precede larger seismic activity. Continuous monitoring, they say, remains essential.
Situation Normal in Khuzdar, Monitoring Continues
By Sunday afternoon, conditions in Khuzdar and surrounding areas were reported to be normal. Markets and public services resumed operations as usual. NSMC and local disaster management officials continue to closely monitor the situation, with no new seismic activity recorded so far.
Authorities have advised residents to stay calm, avoid spreading rumors, and rely only on official information. For now, Balochistan remains calm, though administrative vigilance continues.
