The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made this plan to save highways from jams and encroachment. New initiative to stop encroachment on highways
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the problems of development of settlements, unauthorized parking, and encroachment have become common on national highways. The ministry has taken several steps in collaboration with the state governments to solve these problems.
To make this effort more effective, the ministry has introduced a new feature in the mobile application called “Rajamargyatra”. Through this facility, citizens can now easily report incidents of encroachment. This facility will not only be helpful in identifying encroachment but will also strengthen the security of national highways.
New schemes to reduce traffic congestion on highways
New initiative to stop encroachment on highways: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari informed that to reduce traffic congestion and solve the problems of jams, various measures are taken on highways passing through built-up areas. These measures include the construction of bypasses, elevated roads, flyovers, underpasses and foot-over bridges depending upon the traffic volume, technical and economic feasibility, availability of land and funds.
Also, to avoid the recurrence of slum development, new bypasses and highways are developed as access-controlled facilities, so that traffic problems are reduced in future and the pace of development is maintained.
Special drive to remove encroachment
Special drive to remove encroachment: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari informed that a special drive is being carried out to remove encroachments and unauthorised occupation from national highways in various states including Uttarakhand. Under this initiative, the Ministry has requested all the state governments to provide support to the respective highway administrations for the removal of encroachments under the National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act, 2002.
For this, it has also been recommended to issue necessary guidelines to the local revenue and police authorities, so that encroachments on national highways can be removed effectively and road safety can be improved.
