US rare earth supply chain: Global competition over rare minerals is intensifying. In this context, the United States has taken an important step at the strategic level. The administration led by President Donald Trump is going to organize a high-level discussion with ministers from several countries, including the European Union. The focus of this meeting will be on those minerals that are considered essential for modern industry and defense needs.

This category includes elements such as cobalt, nickel, manganese, graphite, and lithium. Along with these, the group of ‘rare earth’ metals is also included, which consists of a total of 17 elements. These are widely used in advanced technology, energy, vehicles, and defense systems.

Production data shows that demand for these metals has increased rapidly over the past few years. At the global level, raw production of rare earths rose significantly from 2019 to 2024, making it clear that this sector has become important from both strategic and economic perspectives.

A large part of the rare earth market is linked to four specific elements—neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium. These are called magnetic rare earths. The high-power magnets made from them are small in size but extremely powerful, and their use has increased rapidly in electric motors, wind turbines, and electronic devices.

A mobile phone uses a few grams of rare earths, while in the motors of electric vehicles this amount reaches several kilograms. These metals are also used in oil refining, glass polishing, laser technology, and the chemical industry. Some rare earth elements are used in medical equipment, dental treatments, and skin treatments. Industrial lasers used for metal cutting and designing also depend on them.

The importance of rare earths becomes even greater in the aviation and defense sectors. They are used in modern fighter aircraft, missile systems, and magnets that can withstand high temperatures. Due to light but strong alloys, their demand remains steady in the aerospace sector as well.
