Iran Travel Advisory: The tension on the streets of Tehran that had been gradually increasing over the past few weeks has now reached a serious turning point. Amid spreading protests in Iran, the Indian Embassy has issued a new advisory for its citizens present there, clearly stating that they should leave Iran as soon as possible. This advice has come after two previous warnings issued in January.

What Has the Embassy Said?

In its advisory, the embassy has given one clear message to students, pilgrims, traders, and tourists — return as soon as possible through available commercial flights. Along with this, citizens have been advised to stay away from crowded areas and places where demonstrations are taking place.

The embassy has also said that every citizen should keep their passport and identity card with them at all times, keep an eye on local media and government announcements, and remain in constant contact with the embassy. Indians who have not yet registered themselves with the embassy have been asked to immediately complete online registration through the MEAERS portal.

How Are the Ground Situations Developing?

For the second consecutive day, students took to the streets in Tehran and several other major cities. A large number of young people gathered outside well-known institutions such as Tehran University, Sharif University of Technology, Amirkabir, and Shahid Beheshti. In some places, clashes were also seen between protesters and groups supporting the government.

In the name of security, Basij forces linked to the IRGC have been deployed around campuses, and heavily armed personnel have been seen. According to international media, thousands of people have been detained in recent days, although the Iranian government has not released any official figures. On the nights of January 8 and 9, internet and phone services were disrupted in several parts of the country, after which reports of violence surfaced.

External pressure is also not low. Amid the already ongoing tensions with the United States and Israel, this internal unrest is making Iran’s situation more complicated. The embassy has said that conditions are changing rapidly, and therefore caution is extremely necessary.
