India to Host AI Impact Summit 2026 in February

India is set to host the ‘AI Impact Summit 2026’ in February 2026, an event that will not only showcase the nation’s technological capabilities but also underline its vision of making Artificial Intelligence (AI) accessible, safe, and beneficial for every section of society. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently informed Parliament that the summit will be held on 19 and 20 February and will bring together policymakers, technologists, researchers, and innovators from across the globe.
Initiative to Make AI Accessible for All
The AI Impact Summit 2026 expands on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making technology ‘useful for the common citizen’. This summit is set to become a landmark in ensuring that the focus of discourse is not just on technological advances in AI, but on its ethical and inclusive applications. The Modi government’s agenda centres on using AI in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, climate change, and public administration — ensuring its benefits reach the last mile of society.
IndiaAI Mission: Building Indigenous AI
The foundation of this summit lies in the Government of India’s IndiaAI Mission — a comprehensive and multi-layered strategy aimed at creating indigenous AI models tailored to the country’s linguistic and cultural diversity. These models are being designed not only for technical sophistication but also to address local needs. A key highlight is their open-source nature, enabling startups across the country to access and utilise these models for developing innovative AI-based applications.
Startups Like Sarvam AI, Socket AI, Gyani AI and GAN AI Driving the Effort
India’s rapidly emerging AI startups are playing a leading role in this initiative. Companies like Sarvam AI, Socket AI, Gyani AI, and GAN AI are developing foundational AI models designed to work in Indian languages. Their efforts clearly demonstrate that India is evolving not only as a consumer but also as an innovator and leader in AI development.
Strengthening AI Infrastructure
To accelerate AI innovation at the grassroots level, the government is rapidly strengthening critical infrastructure. Plans are underway to make GPU resources for high-performance computing widely available to startups and research institutions. Nearly 34,000 GPUs are being provided under subsidy schemes to help startups train their models on a larger scale.
Simultaneously, the AIKosh platform has been further enriched — currently hosting over 1,000 datasets and 208 AI models. These range from Indian language text-to-speech tools to models serving diverse social sectors.
Funding for 30 AI Projects
The government has funded 30 AI-based pilot applications focused on public interest sectors such as health, climate, education, agriculture, and governance. The aim is to develop solutions that bring direct change to people’s lives — enabling, for instance, farmers to receive crop advisory based on real-time weather data via their phones or providing better prenatal health monitoring for mothers in rural areas.
India’s Presence in the Global Startup Ecosystem
Under the IndiaAI Startups Global Programme, ten leading Indian AI startups are receiving international mentorship at top institutions like Station F and HEC Paris. Innovators such as Privasapien Technologies (privacy-enhancing AI) and Secure Blink (cybersecurity) are part of this initiative, highlighting India’s growing footprint in the global AI ecosystem.
Government’s Focus on AI Safety
In a rapidly evolving AI environment, India has prioritised responsible and secure AI use. The government has set up the IndiaAI Safety Institute, which is working on reducing biases in AI systems, researching machine unlearning technologies, and ensuring the authenticity of digital content through watermarking and similar tools.
In parallel, robust legal frameworks such as the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (2023), IT Act (2000) and IT Rules (2021) have been established to safeguard privacy and promote responsible AI usage.
India’s Leadership Role at the AI Impact Summit 2026
The AI Impact Summit 2026 will provide India an opportunity to position itself as a leader on global decision-making platforms. The summit will also serve as an important step in bringing the Global South into the mainstream of AI policymaking. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced at the Paris AI Summit that India would host the next edition — signalling that India is not just a participant but an active policy shaper in the AI space.
Conclusion
‘AI Impact Summit 2026’ represents a bold, strategic, and forward-looking move by India towards technological democratisation and an inclusive digital future. It will not only help make AI accessible to every citizen but will also strengthen India’s position on the global stage as a leader in ethical and human-centric AI. This historic event is expected to provide direction, inspiration, and global recognition to AI innovation in India.
