Rome | Amazon Italy antitrust fine: US e-commerce company Amazon has decided to continue its appeal against an antitrust fine, despite an Italian court reducing the penalty imposed on it. The company says the fine itself was unjustified and it will try to get it fully cancelled.
Italy’s competition watchdog, the Italian Competition Authority, had imposed a fine of 1.13 billion euros on Amazon in 2021. The regulator alleged that the company misused its strong position in e-commerce logistics services and restricted competition.
Recently, after an order by a regional administrative court, the fine amount was reduced to 752.4 million euros. However, Amazon has made it clear that it does not agree even with this revised decision.
In a statement issued by the company, it said it will continue to challenge the decision of Italy’s competition authority and will firmly present its side in the legal process. Amazon says the allegations against it are not correct and that there is no basis for any penalty.
In this case, not only Amazon, but Italy’s antitrust authority is also preparing to appeal in a higher court against the reduction in the fine. However, the regulator has not made any official comment on this.
This case is linked to the ongoing strict approach in Italy regarding the market conduct of big tech companies and compliance with competition rules, and it is currently moving forward under the legal process.
