Apple India Jobs: iPhone maker Apple has announced that it will provide 2 lakh direct jobs in India by March 2025. According to this figure, about 70% of these i.e. about 1.40 lakh jobs will be for women. This information has been given by Apple and its suppliers to the central government.
Apple aims to increase its focus on India by reducing its dependence on China. Currently, Apple’s contract manufacturers such as Foxconn, Wistron (now Tata Electronics), and Pegatron have already provided direct jobs to 80,872 people in India. Apart from this, suppliers like Tata Group, Salcomp, Motherson, Foxlink (Tamil Nadu), Sunwoda (Uttar Pradesh), ATL (Haryana), and Jabil (Maharashtra) have together generated about 84,000 direct jobs.
Situation after 2020
Since the implementation of the smartphone Production Linked Initiative (PLI) scheme in 2020, Apple’s vendors and suppliers have created 1.65 lakh jobs in India. The Government of India estimates that every direct job in the electronics industry creates three additional jobs. Accordingly, a total of 5 to 6 lakh jobs could be created through the Apple ecosystem by March 2025.
iPhone manufacturing in India
Apple started manufacturing in India in 2017 with the iPhone SE. After this, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13 were also manufactured in India. Major manufacturing partner Foxconn’s plant is located in Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
Part of the PLI scheme
Apple’s contract manufacturers Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron are part of the Government of India’s Rs 41,000 crore Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. This scheme has rapidly boosted iPhone manufacturing in India.
