COVID-19 XEC Variant

The threat of the coronavirus epidemic remains worldwide, and now a new variant has emerged, named XEC. It is a new sub-variant of Omicron, which has spread from Germany to 27 countries in the last three months. Scientists have warned that this is a “more infectious” variant of COVID-19, which may soon become the dominant strain.

Spread of XEC variant

After being first identified in Germany in June 2023, the XEC variant has rapidly spread to the UK, US, Denmark and other countries. According to the BBC report, this variant has been identified in more than 500 samples in 27 countries including Poland, Norway, Luxembourg, Ukraine, Portugal and China. Its number of cases is increasing rapidly, especially in Denmark, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands.

Dangerous features

Experts say that the XEC variant has some new changes, which may help it spread faster in winter. However, vaccination is still proving effective in preventing severe cases. According to Professor Francois Balloux of University College London, XEC has a “slight infection advantage” compared to other recently emerged COVID variants, but the existing vaccine can protect against severe cases.

Possible symptoms

Symptoms of this new variant of COVID-19 may include:

  • Fever
  • Cold
  • Severe body ache
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Sore throat

Apart from this, symptoms like difficulty in breathing, headache, loss of taste and smell, vomiting and diarrhoea can also be seen.

Situation in India

At present, the XEC variant has not been confirmed in India, but experts have advised to be cautious. It is important to monitor the COVID-19 situation globally to ensure preparedness and precautions for healthcare systems.

Amid the growing concern about this new variant, people should continue to follow vaccination and health measures.
