If you have filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) before 31 July 2024 and have not received the refund yet, then you do not need to worry. Sometimes refunds can also be delayed due to delays in ITR processing. Know here why there is a delay and how to solve it.
Reasons for delay in ITR Processing
ITR Refund Delay
- Lack of e-verification: If you have not e-verified your ITR, your return may be cancelled and refund will not be issued. E-verification is mandatory within 30 days of filing the ITR.
- Selecting the wrong form: Sometimes using the wrong form can also delay processing. Make sure you have filled out the correct form and entered all the information correctly.
- Processing time: Generally ITR processing can take 15 to 45 days. However, the department has to process the ITR within 9 months of the end of the financial year. If this deadline is missed, the department may conduct a detailed scrutiny of your return.
- Deductions and exemptions claimed: How much deduction or exemption you have claimed and whether it is already included in Form 16 can also cause delay in processing.
What to do?
- Check refund status: Follow these steps to check your tax refund status online:
- Visit the e-filing portal.
- Enter your user ID and password.
- Click on ‘View details’.
- Here you can check the status of your filed ITR, which will show whether the refund has been issued or not.
- Complain: If there is excessive delay in processing, you can complain by visiting the income tax portal or contacting the helpline number of the Central Processing Center (CPC).
- Check the correct information and form: Make sure you have filled in the correct information and selected the correct form. If there is any mistake, correct it and do e-verification again.
Through these measures, you can understand the status of your refund processing and get a solution from the concerned department.
