Imran Khan’s Vision Loss in Jail Sparks Fresh Political Debate in Pakistan

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has suffered major vision loss in his right eye while in jail. The development has again drawn attention to Pakistan’s long history of legal action and pressure on opposition leaders.

Imran Khan eye condition: Serious information about the health of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan came before the Supreme Court on Thursday. His lawyer told the court that heavy damage has happened in Khan’s right eye due to a blood clot, and now only about 15 percent vision remains in it.

According to reports, Imran Khan, who is lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, has developed a serious eye disease called central retinal vein occlusion. His party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf alleges that due to not getting proper treatment on time, his vision may be lost permanently. Khan’s sister has also expressed concern about his condition before the media. Imran Khan has been in jail for about two and a half years.

Old pattern of action on opposition

Imran Khan’s case reminds of that sequence seen for a long time in Pakistan’s politics, in which after going out of power, leaders have faced arrest, exile, or strict legal action. In Pakistan’s history, till now no prime minister has been able to complete his full term.

Examples of Bhutto and Benazir

In the 1970s, popular leader and prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was arrested after the military coup in 1977. Later he was declared guilty in a murder case and was hanged in 1979. His daughter and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto also faced jail and exile many times, and she was assassinated in 2007 during election campaigning.

Cases of Nawaz Sharif and Musharraf

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was arrested in 1999 after the change of power by General Pervez Musharraf. He was sentenced, but later under an agreement he was sent into exile to Saudi Arabia. In 2017, the court declared him disqualified for public office in the Panama Papers case.

On the other hand, Pervez Musharraf was also given the death sentence by a special court in a treason case, though he went abroad and died in Dubai in 2023.

Imran Khan’s present crisis

Imran Khan was removed from power in 2022 through a no-confidence motion. After this, since 2023 he has been in jail in various cases. His party alleges that the present political system and the security establishment together are trying to weaken the opposition.

Analysts believe that military intervention, repeated changes of power, and legal actions in Pakistan have continuously affected democratic institutions. Imran Khan’s case is also being seen as the latest link of the same wider political struggle.
