India–Canada diplomatic meeting: On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, diplomatic contact between India and Canada appears to be gaining pace. The recent meeting between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand is being seen as a sign of recent positive movement in relations between the two countries. This conversation has taken place at a time when a visit to India by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is being indicated for next month.
According to Canada’s foreign ministry, Global Affairs Canada (GAC), this is the fifth meeting between the two ministers since September 2025. The ministry says that the ongoing high-level talks show progress toward stability and trust in bilateral relations.
After the meeting, Jaishankar said on social media that his discussion with Anita Anand was positive and that India–Canada relations are moving forward. Anand also described the conversation as useful and said that the commitment to work together on shared priorities has been reaffirmed.
In which areas there was discussion on increasing cooperation

During the talks, emphasis was placed on expanding cooperation in areas such as energy, technology, trade and innovation. The Canadian side described India as an important partner and said that through technical cooperation, new opportunities can be created for industries, businesses and workers of both countries. Repeating the point about constructive cooperation, Anand said that she is willing to deepen partnership with India further.
Both leaders also reviewed the progress made under the joint framework of India–Canada relations announced in October 2025 and described it as satisfactory. This is being seen as an important step toward giving an institutional base to bilateral ties.
Conversation after tension

Relations between India and Canada have gone through a difficult phase in recent years. In 2023, after allegations made by then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, diplomatic tension increased between the two countries. India had described these allegations as baseless and without foundation. The meeting held in Munich is not being seen as just a formal conversation, but as an effort to restore trust after the previous tense phase.
