Spirit maker John Distilleries Limited (JDL) has strengthened its position in the global market with its Paul John Single Malt (PJSM) whiskey. The company is currently exporting PJSM whiskey to more than 50 countries of the world including the US, France, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Japan. This global reach is part of the company’s expansion strategy.
Expansion plan in Goa plant
The company has recently increased the capacity of single malt distillery at its Goa plant by almost three times. An investment of about Rs 100 crore has been made in this expansion. With the plan of new variants, the company’s vision is that this expansion will meet the growing demand for PJSM whiskey in domestic and international markets.
Effects of expansion
JDL Chairman Paul P John said, “We have increased the capacity of our Goa distillery from 1.3 million litres to 3 million litres per annum. This investment will help us meet the growing demand for PJSM whisky in the global and domestic markets.” In 2023-24, JDL exports around 30,000 cases to countries such as the US, France, UAE and Japan, while selling 72,000 cases in the domestic market.
Indian market growth
Informerics Ratings’ report on alcoholic beverage sales in India states that the market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate (CAGR) of 7 per cent over the next ten years. In 2023, India’s alco-bev market is estimated to be around $55 billion. The reduction in the legal age of drinking, the growing middle-class population, and the growing popularity of whisky are fueling this growth.
Future plans
John Distilleries Limited also plans to launch new variants of premium rum and vodka in the future. Along with this, the company is working towards further expanding its distillery network, thereby strengthening its hold in both domestic and international markets.
