iPhone 16 Series: New camera specifications and capture button

iPhone 16 Series

Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone 16 series next month. Recent leaks have revealed information about a new upgraded camera system and a new capture button for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus camera specifications

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will have a vertically positioned dual rear camera setup, which will be vertical rather than diagonally.

The primary camera will come with a 48MP sensor with f/1.6 aperture and 2X optical zoom, while the secondary ultra-wide camera will offer an improved f/2.2 aperture with 0.5X zoom, up from f/2.4 previously. This improvement is also expected to improve low-light performance. Additionally, these non-Pro models will also support macrophotography for the first time.

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max camera specifications

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will retain three rear camera lenses: a wide, an ultra-wide, and a telephoto lens. The primary camera will remain with a 48MP sensor with f/1.78 aperture and 2X optical zoom.

Both Pro models will now come with a 5X telephoto lens, replacing the 3X telephoto lens on the iPhone 15 Pro. This telephoto lens will have a 12MP sensor and f/2.8 aperture.

The ultra-wide lens on the Pro models will be upgraded to a 48MP sensor, which matches the pixel-binning feature of the primary camera. This will provide 0.7-micrometre pixels in full resolution or 1.4-micrometre pixels in quad-pixel mode. Users will be able to capture 48MP ProRAW photos, which will provide more data for post-processing.

New camera features

iPhone 16 series new camera features: The iPhone 16 series will introduce a new image format JPEG-XL, which will join HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRAW, and ProRAW Max. Additionally, the Pro models will support 3K video recording with Dolby Vision at 120 frames per second, an upgrade from the 1080P and 4K options available on the iPhone 15 Pro.

Capture button

iPhone capture button: All four new iPhone models will feature a new capture button, located in the lower-right corner. This capacitive button will only activate when touched, preventing accidental activation. This button will be used with camera-specific apps and users will be able to select which app will open when the button is pressed.

The capture button will have a force-sensitive half-press feature, which will be used for actions such as exposure and locking focus. Features like zooming, applying filters, adjusting exposure, and controlling background blur will also be available.

With iOS 18, users will get the option to replace the camera shortcut on the lock screen with this physical control.

Launch date

iPhone 16 series launch date: Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 16 series on September 10. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
