Italy Clears Tough Migration Bill Allowing Ban on Migrant Ships

Italy’s government has approved a new bill to tighten illegal immigration controls. The proposal includes maritime restrictions, stronger surveillance, and authority to block migrant ships from entering territorial waters.

Italy Illegal Immigration Bill: The government led by Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has approved a new bill aimed at increasing strictness on illegal immigration. In the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, the proposal passed includes a provision to impose special maritime restrictions to stop migrant ships moving toward Italian coasts.

After the government’s decision, the proposal will now be presented in both houses of Parliament. Only after getting approval from there will it be implemented as law. Under the new provisions, there is mention of strengthening border security, increasing maritime surveillance, and speeding up coordination with European agencies. In addition, authorities have also been given the power to stop ships trying to enter Italy’s territorial waters in certain circumstances.

ITALY APPROVES NEW MIGRATION BILL

The bill clearly states that if there is a serious risk to public order or national security from a migrant vessel such as the risk of terrorist activity or infiltration then it can be barred from entering Italian waters for up to 30 days. If needed, this period can be extended to a maximum of six months.
