Meta has stopped work on its Apple Vision Pro replica “La Jolla” headset. The project began in November 2023 and was planned to be brought to market by 2027. However, it has now been cancelled.
The “La Jolla” headset used a micro OLED display, which made its cost significantly higher than $1,000 (83,813 Indian Rupee). The Apple Vision Pro, which is priced at $3,500 (2,93,348 Indian Rupee), also did not get the expected success in the market. This makes it clear that it can be challenging for high-priced headsets to make a place in the market, especially when two similar products are competing.
“We always have multiple prototypes in development. But not all make it to production. Some we pursue and some we drop. Decisions like these happen every day, and stories based on a single decision don’t paint the full picture,” said Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s CTO.
Although the “La Jolla” headset has been cancelled, Meta is working on a cheaper “Quest” headset, codenamed “Ventura.” The device could launch before the end of the year. Additionally, Meta plans to introduce new AR glasses next month, and the “Quest 4” is expected to arrive in 2026.
