MG Windsor New Battery Update: Launch Date, Range, and Features

As the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to rise in India, MG Motor India is gearing up to introduce a significant update to its popular electric SUV, the MG Windsor. The company is set to equip this model with a larger 50.6kWh battery, boosting its range from the current 332 km (ARAI) to an impressive 460 km (CLTC). Alongside the upgraded battery, potential new features like the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) could make this vehicle even more appealing. According to sources, the updated MG Windsor might hit the market as early as next month, May 2025. MG Windsor’s Current Performance and Popularity

Since its debut in September 2024, the MG Windsor has taken the Indian market by storm. With its distinctive design, premium interiors, and innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, it has quickly become a favourite among buyers. In the seven months from September 2024 to March 2025, the Windsor recorded sales of 19,394 units, averaging over 2,700 units per month. This figure places it ahead of strong competitors like the Tata Nexon EV in its segment.
However, the current 38kWh battery, offering a range of 332 km (ARAI), while sufficient for city driving, has left some customers wanting more for long-distance travel. Recognising this gap, MG is now preparing to roll out a variant with a larger battery to meet these demands.
New 50.6kWh Battery: How Much Will the Range Improve?
The upcoming update will equip the MG Windsor with a 50.6kWh battery, a configuration already available in Indonesia under the Wuling Cloud EV badge. This battery promises a range of 460 km based on the CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) standard. While the range under Indian ARAI standards might differ slightly, experts estimate it to be in the 450-460 km range.
In real-world conditions, the current 38kWh Windsor delivered an efficiency of 8.1 km/kWh and a range of 308 km in our tests—just 24 km shy of its claimed range. This consistency makes it highly reliable in its segment. With the new 50.6kWh battery, the real-world range is expected to approach 400 km. This improvement could be a game-changer, not just for urban commuters but also for those planning highway trips or longer journeys.
Charging Time and Performance
Charging time is another critical aspect with the new battery. The existing 38kWh model takes about 46 minutes to charge from 0-80% using a 50kW DC fast charger, while a full charge via a standard AC charger takes around 16 hours. With the 50.6kWh battery, charging times might see a slight increase, likely under 50 minutes for fast charging and around 18-20 hours for AC charging.
Power and torque figures will remain unchanged. The updated variant will continue to deliver 136hp and 200Nm of torque from its front-axle-mounted electric motor. However, the larger battery could add some weight, potentially affecting performance marginally. That said, this difference is unlikely to noticeably impact the driving experience.
New Features and the Arrival of ADAS
Beyond the bigger battery, the MG Windsor might come with additional features. Sources suggest that MG is considering integrating an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) with this update. ADAS could include features like autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane assist, enhancing both safety and comfort.
The current model already boasts a host of premium features, such as a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone integration, dual-zone climate control, a 360-degree camera, and a spacious 604-liter boot. Adding ADAS would elevate the Windsor’s appeal, making it a stronger contender against rivals like the Hyundai Creta Electric and Tata Curvv EV.
How Much Will the Price Increase?
The current MG Windsor is priced between ₹14 lakh and ₹16 lakh (ex-showroom). With the 50.6kWh battery and potential new features, the price could rise by ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh, bringing the updated model’s range to approximately ₹16 lakh to ₹18 lakh. This would position it closer to competitors like the Tata Curvv EV and Hyundai Creta Electric. However, MG’s BaaS model—where customers don’t pay the full battery cost upfront—could keep it affordable despite the hike.
Positive Impact on Sales Expected
The MG Windsor is already performing exceptionally in its segment. With 19,394 units sold between September 2024 and March 2025, it’s on track to become India’s fastest electric car to reach 20,000 units. A 26% dip in sales was observed in February 2025, likely due to customers holding off for the bigger-battery version. With this update, sales are expected to rebound strongly.
This upgrade could further solidify MG’s position in the Indian EV market, especially as competitors like Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Mahindra prepare to launch their own electric models.
Where Does the New Windsor Stand in the Competition?
The updated MG Windsor will face stiff competition in its segment. The Tata Curvv EV, claiming over 500 km of range, and the Hyundai Creta Electric, launched in January 2025, are its primary rivals. Additionally, Mahindra’s ‘Born Electric’ models like the BE 6e and XEV 9e are also making waves in the market.
However, the Windsor’s strengths lie in its premium features, spacious interiors, and the BaaS model. If MG prices the updated version competitively with the new battery and ADAS, it could set a new benchmark not just in its segment but across the entire EV market.
