Modi Israel visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will go to Israel on a two-day visit on 25 and 26 February. The official information of this visit was publicly shared by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an international conference. He said that next week the Indian Prime Minister will reach Tel Aviv and both countries will hold discussions on wide-ranging issues.

This visit is taking place at a time when strategic, economic and technological partnership between India and Israel is continuously becoming deeper. According to official sources, during the visit, topics like defense cooperation, bilateral trade, advanced technology and regional security will remain in the main agenda. During this period, Prime Minister Modi may address the Israeli Parliament ‘Knesset’.

Second official visit

As Prime Minister, this will be Narendra Modi’s second visit to Israel. Before this, he had gone to Israel in July 2017. That visit was considered an important stage in relations between the two countries, because it was the first standalone Israel visit by any Indian Prime Minister.
The latest visit is being seen as a link in the recent high-level contacts between the two countries. Last year, delegations from Israel’s tourism, agriculture, economy and finance ministries visited India. In these meetings, discussion was held on moving forward the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and strengthening the framework related to investment. From India’s side also, senior ministers visited Israel and met the top leadership.

Special focus on defense partnership

In relations between India and Israel, the defense sector plays a central role. In recent months, both countries have moved forward work on agreements related to advanced defense technology, joint production and research cooperation. In the annual defense dialogue organized in Tel Aviv, both sides discussed shared projects, training programs and development of new technologies. Concrete steps have been taken towards increasing cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, cyber security and modern military systems. Israel’s Defense Ministry has described India as a major strategic partner.

Expansion of trade and technological relations

Strategic Partnership Expansion

Activity has also increased between the two countries regarding bilateral trade and investment. Efforts are continuing to finalize the Free Trade Agreement. There is also a plan to strengthen partnership in agricultural technology, water management, startup cooperation and innovation-based industries. Experts believe that this visit will not remain limited to a formal meeting only, but from this the direction of long-term economic and strategic cooperation will become clear.

Discussion on regional and global issues

If sources are to be believed, in this meeting important issues like regional security situation, changing equations in West Asia and dealing together with terrorism can be discussed. In the last nearly one decade, relations between India and Israel have become quite strong. Cooperation has continuously increased in areas like defense, technology and trade. This proposed visit at the end of February is taking place at a time when both countries are trying to take their partnership further ahead. It is being believed that during this visit, emphasis can be given on making cooperation more wide in these three areas.
