Narayana Murthy, co-founder of India’s leading IT company, Infosys, has publicly expressed his concerns about Artificial Intelligence (AI). He said that nowadays, AI is being promoted for every little thing in India, and it has become a “fashion”. Murthy believes that many so-called AI products and services are silly and strange, and the hype that is being created about AI is far from reality.

Murthy made this statement at the TiEcon Mumbai 2025 event. Sharing his views at the event, Murthy said that now every program and initiative in India is being promoted in the name of AI, while in reality, many of them do not match the technical concept of AI. He also raised many things related to AI, which are being claimed, but they are mostly beyond understanding and far from reality.

Murthy also highlighted two major principles of AI: machine learning and deep learning. He described machine learning as “massive correlation” in which predictions are made by analysing huge amounts of data. At the same time, he described deep learning as similar to the functioning of the human brain and said that it uses unsupervised algorithms, which help machines learn by themselves and make better decisions.

Narayana Murthy also clarified that the so-called AI technologies currently available are, in fact, like old programs, which can also be called “foolish”. He said that today’s AI systems are not as impressive and accurate as they are being promoted.

Impact of AI on employment

When Murthy was asked about the impact of AI on employment, he said that technological progress will definitely impact jobs. However, he believes that if AI is used in a helpful manner, it can contribute to economic development. He talked about the right use of AI in the transportation and healthcare sectors, as an example, which can lead to company expansion and create new employment opportunities.

Murthy also clarified that the hype being spread about AI does not match the reality. He said that as new technology comes, some jobs are lost, but if it is adopted in the right direction, it can benefit the economy. He also believed that the impact of AI will not be completely negative; rather it can also create new opportunities in some areas.
