Paris Olympics 2024: Neeraj Chopra wins silver medal in javelin throw, Arshad Nadeem sets new Olympic record
Paris Olympics: India’s leading javelin throw athlete Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024, while the gold medal was won by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who set a new Olympic record by throwing 92.97 meters. Neeraj Chopra’s throw was 89.45 meters, which was enough to get him the silver medal.
This is Neeraj’s second Olympic medal, and he has become the second male athlete from India to win medals in two consecutive Olympics. Earlier, Sushil Kumar had achieved this feat by winning medals in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
In the final, Neeraj’s fifth and sixth throws were fouls, due to which he could not get close to Arshad Nadeem’s throw. Arshad Nadeem covered a distance of 91.79 meters in the sixth throw, which proves his championship potential. After the fourth round, Arshad Nadeem was in first place and Neeraj Chopra was in second place. Anderson Peters of Grenada was in third place.
After the first three rounds of the final, Finland’s Oliver Helander, Toni Kärnen, Brazil’s Mauricio Luiz D’Silva, and Adrien Merdere were eliminated from the competition, while the remaining eight athletes played the remaining rounds of the final. Neeraj’s third throw was a deliberate foul. Arshad Nadeem covered a distance of 88.72 meters in the third throw, and Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch threw 88.50 meters and came in third place. Peter Anderson finished fourth.
In the second round, Neeraj threw 89.45 meters, which was his season’s best throw. Neeraj had to break Arshad Nadeem’s record to win the gold medal.
Arshad Nadeem threw 86.16 meters in the first round, which put him in first place. Both Neeraj and Arshad’s first throw was a foul. The final consisted of 12 athletes who made 6 throws each and the athlete with the longest throw won the gold medal. Neeraj had thrown 89.34m in the qualification and made it to the finals.
