Ongoing military activities in West Asia have destabilized the global energy market. Concerns are deepening at the international level over oil and gas supplies. Amid rising military tensions in West Asia, Russia Energy Supply Assurance has emerged as a sign of relief for India. A senior official of the Embassy of Russia in India has made it clear that if the supply chain is affected due to the current situation, Russia is ready to meet India’s energy requirements.

During interaction with the media, the Russian official said that if disruption in oil and gas supply continues for a long time, Russia will stand with India. His statement came at a time when uncertainty in the energy market has increased due to attacks and counter-actions in the Gulf region and fluctuations are being seen in crude oil prices.

Tensions increased further when reports came that Iranian drone attacks targeted industrial structures in Qatar. It was reported that important infrastructure of Ras Laffan Industrial City and Mesaieed Industrial City was affected. After this, Qatar’s government energy company QatarEnergy decided to temporarily stop the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and related products. Qatar is a major global exporter of LNG and India is a large buyer of its gas. In such a situation, this development has brought new concern.

Global unease over energy supply increased further when Iran announced the closure of the important sea route Strait of Hormuz. This strait is a key route for the transportation of the world’s oil and gas. The possibility of its blockage can increase pressure on prices in the international market and can disrupt the supply chain.

India meets a large part of its energy needs through imports. In such a situation, the impact of any large-scale crisis in West Asia can directly affect the Indian market. In this context, Russia’s assurance is being considered strategically important. If supply from the Gulf region is affected, Russia can play a role in providing crude oil and gas to India as an alternative source.
