What is the cause of an earthquake?

The upper surface of the earth is made up of seven tectonic plates. Earthquakes are generated when these plates collide with each other, rub or try to enter each other’s area. When these plates change their position, the energy trapped between them is suddenly released, causing the earth to shake. This process gives rise to earthquakes. Sometimes the energy is released slowly, causing repeated aftershocks.

Earthquake intensity and effects

Earthquake intensity is measured on the Richter scale, which indicates the strength of an earthquake and its effects:

  • 5 to 5.9: Furniture may move, and minor damage to homes.
  • 6 to 6.9: Impact on building foundations, damage to upper floors.
  • 7 to 7.9: Buildings may collapse, and underground pipes may burst.
  • 8 to 8.9: Major bridges and buildings may collapse.
