From September 1, 2024, mobile users in India can get relief from unwanted calls and messages, as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued new guidelines. Under these rules, telemarketing calls and messaging will be sent from a specific 140-number series, which will help users easily identify which calls and messages are promotional. Apart from this, the 160 number series will be used for financial transactions and service voice calls.
This move of TRAI is to move telemarketing calls and messaging to the blockchain-based Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform, thereby reducing fraud and unwanted calls. Consumers will now need to block the numbers on their own, but the numbers can be unblocked for some time (usually 2 hours) for any emergency.
TRAI has also clarified that if telemarketing companies take undue advantage of emergency situations and reactivate blocked numbers, their service will be suspended for a month. If the mistake is repeated, the company can also be blacklisted.
With the implementation of these new rules, consumers are expected to get relief from unwanted calls and messages, and this can also reduce cases of fraud. Telecom companies have been given instructions in this regard and it is expected that these changes will ensure a more secure and comfortable experience for users.
