Tesla Model Y Arrives in India with 622KM Range

Tesla Model Y Arrives in India: Renowned American electric car company Tesla has finally entered the Indian market. On 15 July 2025, the company officially launched its much-awaited electric SUV Model Y in the Indian market. The starting price of this vehicle has been set at ₹60 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), clearly indicating that Tesla is directly targeting the country’s premium electric car segment.
Two Variants, Two Price Points
Currently, Tesla is offering two variants of the Model Y in India:
- Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) – ₹60 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai)
- Model Y Long Range RWD – ₹68 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai)
Through these two variants, Tesla aims to offer Indian customers a choice between performance and range. These prices are based on cash purchase. The on-road price of the Tesla Model Y RWD in Mumbai will be ₹61,07,190, while the on-road price of the Long Range RWD variant will be ₹69,15,190.
Why Is It Costlier in India Than in the US? Here Are Two Major Reasons
The price of the Tesla Model Y in India is significantly higher compared to the US market. While its price in the US is around $44,990 (approximately ₹37.5 lakh), its starting price in India is ₹60 lakh. There are two main reasons for this:
- Import Duty: Since these cars are being brought to India as Completely Built Units (CBUs), they attract heavy import duties, significantly increasing the cost.
- Logistics Cost: The Model Y has been shipped from Tesla’s Shanghai plant to India. Shipping, customs clearance, and other logistic expenses also contribute to the total price of the car.
First Tesla Showroom in Mumbai, Bookings Open
Along with the launch, Tesla has also opened its first official retail store in India. This premium showroom is located in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). For now, the company has started bookings for Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram.

Tesla will operate in India by deviating from the traditional dealership model. The company will follow the same strategy it uses globally — a direct-to-customer model, where customers can purchase vehicles directly from the company without any third-party dealers.
Who Are the Competitors?
In India, the Tesla Model Y will face direct competition from premium electric SUVs that have already established a strong presence in this segment. This list includes major models such as Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, BYD Seal, BMW iX, Audi e-tron, and Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV.
All these vehicles are attracting Indian luxury EV buyers with their range, technology, and brand value. In such a scenario, the Tesla Model Y will have to face tough competition to prove itself in this market.
Global Competition and the BYD Challenge
Tesla has entered India at a time when it is witnessing a decline in market share globally. In particular, Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has recently overtaken Tesla in terms of sales numbers. In such a situation, all eyes will now be on Tesla’s strategy and performance in a new and emerging market like India.
Tesla Model Y Highlights: Range, Performance, and Features
- Range: According to WLTP certification, the RWD variant of the Model Y offers a range of up to 500 km, while the Long Range RWD variant reaches up to 622 km.
- Acceleration: This electric SUV can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 to 5.9 seconds, placing it among the fastest vehicles in its segment.
- Charging: With Tesla’s Supercharger, this car can be charged for approximately 240 to 265 km of range in just 15 minutes, making long-distance travel easier.
- Features: The car comes equipped with premium features such as a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system, panoramic glass roof, power-adjustable seats, dual-zone climate control, and Tesla’s in-house operating system, offering a fully digital and luxurious experience.
Tesla Still Unclear on Local Manufacturing in India
So far, Tesla has not made any official announcement regarding local manufacturing in India. The company’s stance on this matter remains unclear. However, auto experts believe that if Tesla sets up an assembly unit or manufacturing facility in India in the future, the cost of the car could be significantly reduced and prices could come down considerably.
Conclusion
Tesla’s entry into India could prove to be a major turning point for the country’s electric vehicle sector. While its current prices are relatively high, if the company starts local manufacturing in the future, the brand could reach a broader customer base. Tesla’s presence has intensified competition in the EV segment in India — and it is now evident that Tesla has emerged as a key player in this race.
